Some Rushing Do's and Do Not's

Happy Monday everyone! It is so weird to think that last Monday was my first day of school! Our first week of school is called syllabus week! This week is usually somewhat easy because our teachers are  just touching on the topics that we are going to cover during the semester and no real homework is assigned. Well unfortunately this was not the case for me. I was swamped with all sorts of work! I started off my week with 2 quizzes and tons of reading. So needless to say I was not a happy camper! But I am sure you guys didn't click on my page to hear me complain so let's get to the real topic of today's post! The do's and do not's of rush week! Rush week will be one of those weeks that you will either love or hate, for me personally it was a little mixture of both! You are going to be flustered, scared, nervous, excited and much much more! But regardless of how you are feeling here are a few tips to remember!

DO:

  • Do be respectful of each and every house! You may go into rush week thinking that you already know what you are going to be. You might think that there are houses that you should skip because you already know that you won't like them. Well let me tell you going in with an attitude like that will get you no where. Regardless of what you think or how you are feeling always go in with an open mind and if nothing else a nice and courteous attitude. Being rude for any reason at any house because you already "know" that it is isn't for you is not lady like or frankly becoming. So make sure you show a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T, trust me it can go a long way and may be the difference between you receiving or not receiving a bid from a house that you like.
  • Do know how to hold a conversation. Now I am not saying that you have to be the most outspoken person in the room, or that you have to have the socializing skills of Ms. America. However, it is important for you to know how to keep a conversation flowing. Ask questions. Be attentive. Look the person in the eye. Verbal and non verbal queues are extremely important. If the girl asks you questions please answer her with something more than a "yes" or "no". Conversation is key not only for rush but also in life. So if you have trouble holding short conversations try practicing with friends or family members!
  • Do dress appropriately. At my school the girls are given specific t-shirts to wear for 3 out of the 5 days. You attire is one of the first things a sorority girl will see when meeting you. Now I am not saying that you have to have designer clothes or anything of that nature, but little things like tucking in your shirt and brushing your hair are always appreciated. For the days when we were given specific shirts, I for example wore them with Jcrew chino's and my Tory Burch sandals. I looked comfy yet put together! You do not want a house to remember you as the girl that wore mismatched socks or something like that. So the bottom line is, it is okay to show character but tastefully.
  • Do write down notes. When your Pi Chi's tell you to write down details about each house do just that. Without notes all of the houses will blend together. Write down details from the conversations you had, what the house looked like, their sign basically whatever will help jog your memory when it is time to preference!
DON'T:
  • Do not talk about any of these....Boys, Alcohol, Sex, Politics, Finances etc. Anything that could be taken offensively or would put the person you are talking to in an awkward position should't be talked about. You are trying to put your best foot forward here! So starting off a conversation with how wasted you were last week is NOT the way to go. Now don't get me wrong I am not saying you can't talk about these things ever, you can just after rush week!
  • Do not ask how they pick girls. EVER. I cannot tell you how many girls asked me about our system. "So I heard you guys cut like this" or "is it true that you guys stay up all night and rate us on a powerpoint?" Let me tell you those girls no matter how nice or cute were an automatic no for me simply based on those questions. So if I were you I would steer clear.
  • Do not feel like you have to take anything they are offering whether it be food or drink. I  remember going through recruitment thinking that I had to take water from every house even if I wasn't necessarily thirsty because I was afraid that if I didn't  they would think badly of me. This isn't true and my friends and I laugh about it now!  I promise that water will not be the determining factor between you receiving or not receiving a bid.
  • Lastly, don't make your choices based on what others think. Being in a sorority is a lifelong commitment and you want to make sure that you are somewhere that you are going to enjoy. Choosing a sorority based on other people's opinions could lead to heartache down the road so always do what is best for you! These next for years of your life are going to fly by, so make sure you are spending them with sisters that you love! Follow your heart and I guarantee that you will end up right where you are supposed to be!
So those are a few of my tips. I literally could go on forever but I tried to condense it down to the ones that I felt were most important! If you guys have any specific questions please feel free to ask me on my tumblr! Do any of you sorority gals out there agree? Any tips to add?

Phew!! I Made It Through Recruitment Week!

Hey guys! Today is my first day back on my normal schedule (yippee!). I am still a little out of it so today's post will mostly be pictures from the week! Recruitment week was fun, stressful, nerve wracking and so much more but I honestly I wouldn't have it any other way! I learned so much about the girls in my chapter and it also gave me a new sense of respect for the women before me who worked as hard as I did to make my recruitment week special! So what did we gain from this week....A wonderful new pledge class (woo hoo MC'12). I can't wait to see what they will bring to our chapter! I loved them all even before I knew them so I am so happy to finally call these girls my sisters! So without further ado here are the pictures from the week!

Love Her
So this day was Pref day! On this day we all wore black dresses, heels and our pins! This was my favourite day by far and it reminded me why I feel in love with Theta in the first place.

The Babies
For our bid day activity we rented out the pool and ordered pizza and drinks! We even had cool frat tanks made for the event! This is all after we came back from a nice dinner downtown! I think going to these sorts of activities as a chapter is what makes us so close!
My Bid Day Buddy!
This is Shaina! She was my bid day buddy! I love her and am so happy that she decided to be a part of Theta!

So that was my week! Like I said it was a lot of work but we love our babies and we would do it ten times over if we had to! For tomorrow's post "What Not To Do During Recruitment Week" I had some interesting conversations and thought I would share! Thanks again for being so patient with me! Can't wait to catch up on all of your blogs!

Work Week!

First of all let me just start this post off by saying how extremely sorry I am that I haven't posted at all this week, or looked at what you all have written. As you all know I am in a sorority (Kappa Alpha Theta) and this week was our "work week". During this week we work from early in the morning till late at night get things ready for all of the PNM's (potential new members)! We use this week to set up, go over songs and lots of other things! So here are some pictures from work week

Some Of My Pledge Class!

The Girls
This specific day was on Saturday! This was the day when all of our parents and friends could come to the house to see part of our routine! We did our songs, showed them the skit etc! It was kind of bittersweet though because we didn't get to perform our walk out like previous years. Our school's sororities all had walks outs up until this year when they decided to take them away. Theta's walk out was definitely something that caught my eye during my rush week. They had on black pencil skirts and a synchronized hair flip! It was so fun to watch. I remember during our lunch breaks we would all clamour around the lunch room window to watch them do it for every party!
My Little Dancer
Unfortunately I can't show you any of the decorations or anything like that until work week is over. But next week I will definitely share some of those! Get excited because you will get to see the different outfits that we wear for each of the days! Ps: for tomorrow's post I will show you pictures of my room! Hope you all had a wonderful week!

Yesterday

Hi guys! I am so sorry for not posting regularly this week, it has just been super hectic with all of the things i've had to get done before going back to school! Here is what I did yesterday:

In the morning I got coffee with my friend mLt! I really miss not seeing her during the school year and this catch up session was much needed. She and I share a lot of the same values and morals and I love talking to her because we both struggle with the same things.  Having her to talk to is such a blessing.

Menu

Inside
Later in the day after hanging out with my other two favourite gals Melissa and Kelsey I headed to get old fashioned ice cream with another one of my great friends Kerry! I had never been to this specific ice cream place before but it was so yummy. As a matter of fact I am planning on stopping by tomorrow before I leave! As you can see from the menu everything is home made! They make the ice cream the traditional way and serve it to you diner style.

The Counter

Homemade Candy

All Of The Glass Cups
The place had the cutest decor! The tables were marble with pink accents! I think pink is the main theme though because it is everywhere as you can see!

Her 3 Younger Sisters

Our Yummy Ice Cream

My Order
It was the best ice cream ever. I also thought while I was there that it would be a wonderful place to go on a date! Very cute and quaint!

Kerry
After yesterday I am definitely rethinking leaving! I just want to stay home and be with my friends forever! Did you guys do anything fun this week?
